The bunkers hold the rest of the story.
For four decades Albania sealed itself off, and poured concrete for well over a hundred thousand bunkers. Bunk’Art 1 and 2, the House of Leaves surveillance museum and the tunnels beneath Tirana are open now — plainly presented, and the clearest way to understand the country you’re standing in.
Rakia, byrek and long lunches.
Albania eats slowly and pours generously — homemade raki, warm byrek, tavë kosi straight from the oven, tomatoes that taste of the field. These are the tables and cooking classes worth clearing an afternoon for.
Days that get the heart going.
Rafts through the Osumi Canyon, the hike up Gamti Mountain for the drone shot over Bovilla’s turquoise reservoir, a paraglider run off the ridge. Albania’s outdoors is close, cheap and mostly to yourself — start with these.
Skanderbeg’s castle, above the plain.
Kruja clings to the mountain north of Tirana — the fortress where Skanderbeg held off the Ottomans, the cobbled old bazaar still selling copper, kilims and antiques, the Dollma teqe on the ridge. The easiest heritage day in the country, and often the first one people book.
